That's Not In My Job Description!
Applying for a new job is daunting for anyone, reading up on the job description and wondering how you’re going to fit into the existing team of people is something everyone does.
But since starting my job as a Marketing Assistant, I realise just how varied the role is and how adaptable you need to be to overcome all the challenges the role presents.
After my first few months at this agency, I realised that everyone is hands on and every team member is not restricted to their main role.
Of course my main responsibilities are ones that I expected, but every day is different and throws up tasks that I never expected to be doing.
Although I took all of this in my stride and didn’t think about it too much; an unorthodox opportunity came up that made me really think about it. Mediating a Golf Day.
Yes, I know - how random and totally not in the job description!
Even though this opportunity has not arisen because of my marketing skills, it is still something that I am going to be doing on Friday and it’s all thanks to the marketing agency and it’s clients.
I won’t go into too much detail, but I will say that it is important to take every opportunity that comes your way. Put it down to experience and just having fun! Not taking life too seriously and having a happy-go-lucky attitude is what has landed me in this position in the first place.
After thinking about this more, I realise that this is the beauty of being an “assistant”. I’m not tied down to one particular task or responsibility all day and will happily assist in whatever needs my expertise - even if it is my people skills!
Having this style of work life has always been a goal of mine ever since being in high school. I’ve always been surrounded by people stuck in a rut and doing something just because it pays the bills. I wanted more than that, I wanted something that tested me creatively and academically. Something that would allow me to practice my hobbies and get paid for it!
That seems like wishful thinking and that is exactly what 14 year old me would be told anytime I was asked what I wanted to do. But it’s the truth and is exactly what I have achieved!
